Sensation: Korea winning Sudirman Cup 2017

As an underdog the Korean Badminton Team started in a perfect week  at the Sudirman Cup 2017. Sensational wins and a great team performance were the key for the title of one of the most popular team events in badminton.

The best teams of the world played from the 21st to 28th of May on the Gold Coast sports & Leisure Centre in Australia for the trophy of the Sudirman Cup 2017. The World championship for mixed teams was held for the 15th time in total and the 1st time in Australia. Next to the favourite teams from China, Denmark and Indonesia was the Korean VICTOR team the surprising winner  receiving all attention.

Only at the beginning of this year it was published that VICTOR will continue to stay as the official supplier of the Korean national team and now they could win together the 4. title in the history of the Sudirman Cup.

The week started  with a clear defeat against Chinese Taipei in the group stage. But the draw resulted in rematch against Chinese Taipei and the Korean made a few changes in the line-up. The result was the revenge and a 3-1 win to get into the semi final.

The semi final was played with the same winning result of 3-1 over Thailand.

In the final the Korean had to play against title holder and favourite China. In the opening match of the men's doubles, the Olympia winner from China Fu/Zhang were still too strong for the new Korean men's double Solgyu Choi/seung Jae Seo and China gained the lead with 1-0.

In the women's singles the Korean Sung Ju Hyun did not show any signs of mercy and won over the Chinese youngster, He, equalizing  the match for 1-1.

The third match was the top match played in the men's singles between Jeon Hyeok Jin and the current Olympia winner and world champion Chen Long form China. Jin tried whatever he could, but Long seemed to be too strong and the Chinese  regained  the lead.

The Korean women's double Lee So Hee and Chang Ye Na  consequently had an unbelievable pressure  before  their match. The All England winners started the match high concentrated and were leading very fast. The Chinese Chen Quingchen and Jia Yifan were able to get back into the match but the Korean used their experience to close the match in tow games to take the final till the last and deciding match.

Solgyu Choi and Chae Yoo Jung had to play against Lu/Huang from China. The Chinese showed great form in the past tournaments, but Choi/Chae played an  extraordinary match with power, smartness and strong will. The match was full of drama and both teams showed the importance of the match with their emotions.

An unforced error of the Chinese gave the match to the Korean and  all memebers of the team stormed the court celebrating  the world champion title 2017 as mixed team.

We congratulate our players, the coaches, the stuff team and the Badminton Korea Association on the Sudirman Cup trophy!
